A book in ancient times consisted of a single long strip of paper or parchment, which was usually kept rolled upon a stick, and was unrolled when a person wished to read it. The roll was usually written on one side only, and hence the particular notice of one that was "written within and without." (Ezekiel 2:10) The writing was arranged in columns.

- Method in class java.util.Calendar
public abstract void roll (int field, boolean up)
Time Field Rolling function. Rolls (up/down) a single unit of time on the given time field. For example, to roll the current date up by one day, you can achieve it by calling: roll(Calendar.DATE, true). When rolling on the year or Calendar.YEAR field, it will roll the year value in the range between 1 and the value returned by calling getMaximum(Calendar.YEAR). When rolling on the month or Calendar.MONTH field, other fields like date might conflict and, need to be changed. For instance, rolling the month on the date 01/31/96 will result in 02/29/96. When rolling on the hour-in-day or Calendar.HOUR_OF_DAY field, it will roll the hour value in the range between 0 and 23, which is zero-based.Parameters: field - the time field. - indicates if the value of the specified time field is to be rolled up or rolled down. Use true if rolling up, false otherwise.up - indicates if the value of the specified time field is to be rolled up or rolled down. Use true if rolling up, false otherwise. - Method in class java.util.GregorianCalendar
public void roll (int field, boolean up)
Overrides Calendar Time Field Rolling function. Rolls (up/down) a single unit of time on the given time field.Overrides: roll in class Calendar Parameters: field - the time field. - Indicates if rolling up or rolling down the field value.up - Indicates if rolling up or rolling down the field value.Throws: IllegalArgumentException - if an unknown field value is given. - Method in class java.util.Calendar
public void roll (int field, int amount)
Time Field Rolling function. Rolls up or down the specified number of units on the given time field. (A negative roll amount means to roll down.) [NOTE: This default implementation on Calendar just repeatedly calls the version of roll() that takes a boolean and rolls by one unit. This may not always do the right thing. For example, if the DAY_OF_MONTH field is 31, rolling through February will leave it set to 28. The GregorianCalendar version of this function takes care of this problem. Other subclasses should also provide overrides of this function that do the right thing. - Method in class java.util.GregorianCalendar
public void roll (int field, int amount)
Roll a field by a signed amount.Overrides: roll in class Calendar

the common form of ancient books. The Hebrew word rendered "roll" or "volume" is meghillah, found in Ezra 6:2; Ps. 40:7; Jer. 36:2, 6, 23, 28, 29; Ezek. 2:9; 3:1-3; Zech. 5:1, 2. "Rolls" (Chald. pl. of sephar, corresponding to Heb. sepher) in Ezra 6:1 is rendered in the Revised Version "archives." In the New Testament the word "volume" (Heb. 10:7; R.V., "roll") occurs as the rendering of the Greek kephalis, meaning the head or top of the stick or cylinder on which the manuscript was rolled, and hence the manuscript itself. (See BOOK.)
