vector graphics
(sometimes called "object-oriented" graphics, though it's nothing to do with object-oriented programming). the representation of separate shapes such as lines, polygons and text, and groups of such objects, as opposed to bitmaps the advantage of vector graphics ("drawing") programs over bitmap ("paint") editors is that multiple overlapping elements can be manipulated independently without using differenet layers for each one. it is also easier to render an object at different sizes and to transform it in other ways without worrying about image resolution and pixels

Vector graphics is the use of polygons to represent images in computer graphics. Vector graphics are based on vectors, which lead through locations called control points or nodes. Each of these points has a definite position on the x and y axes of the work plane and determines the direction of the path; further, each path may be assigned a stroke color, shape, curve, thickness, and fill.

use mathematical descriptions rather than rows of colored dots (Bit Mapped). Vector based graphics represent objects as geometric shapes; straight lines, arcs, etc. They can be scaled and rotated without a loss in quality. Vector graphics are used for ilustrations and typography. Postscript is a vector graphic software language. Programs like Adobe Illustrator, Aldus Freehand, and CorelDraw are vector programs

Graphics consisting of objects, each of which can be separately manipulated - e.g. sized, moved, (un)grouped, positioned to the back/front. The graphic components are calculated, hence can be sized without distortion. File formats include: AutoCAD DXF, CBM, EPS, HGL, PIC, DRW, WMF, WPG.

Vector graphic programs create scalable images with a small file size. With bitmap graphics an image is composed of pixels each pixel having a defined colour, if the image size is increased then the single colour pixel becomes a square block of colour that becomes more obviously a square block as the image size increases. This doesn't happen with vector images as they are stored as a mathematical expression.
